Hot off the press are the 2004-05 Virtual University Online Course Schedules! Look for yours in your school now! If you have never taken an online class before, you are in for the time of you life!
You can now complete you Reading Endorsement requirements with Virtual University Courses.
As stated in the August 4, 2003, memo from the Florida Department of Education, any educator teaching a reading course at the secondary level will be required to have either the K-12 reading endorsement or K-12 reading certificate. Additionally, any educator teaching elementary reading courses must have one of the following qualifications: K-12 reading endorsement, K-12 reading certification, or elementary education certification. Federal law requirements of NCLB for teacher quality must be met by the end of the 2005-2006 school year-specifically, June 30,2006. This requirement is reflected in Florida's Course Code Directory for teacher qualifications of reading courses with the date of July 1, 2006.
Broward County is providing the following online courses to meet the mentioned requirements through the Virtual University Track:
* Foundations of Reading
* Advanced Reading Processes
* Content Area Reading
* Reading Assessment and Instruction
Interventions
* Facilitating Assessment Issues in Reading
Should teachers choose to participate in the Virtual University Track, they must complete all five courses listed above (in any order). In addition to the five online courses, Competency 6: Practicum/Demonstration of Accomplishment must be completed.
Other online courses and face-to-face workshops are available for Reading Endorsement on the Workshop Combination Track. For more information about the Broward County Reading Endorsement Add-On Program (Virtual University and Workshop Combination Tracks) visit the Reading Endorsement Conference in CAB.
Numerous other courses are offered in reading, math, science, social studies, exceptional student education, technology, art, physical education, ESOL, writing, classroom management and student services. The Virtual University website lists all the course offerings and provides course content, syllabus, specific objectives, prerequisites, materials and dates the courses are offered and an online registration system.
