Ask the Superintendent
Dr. Frank Till
Q: Why are we hiring seven more District administrators? What will they do that isn't already being done?

A:The addition of these managers will result in better efficiency in the operations of our Maintenance, Facilities and Information Technologies areas, which will be evidenced at the individual school level in keeping with our mission of fostering student achievement.

I am confident that the new administrators will provide the information and guidance required to deliver better service at all levels, including developing and implementing best practices for their respective areas and creating action plans, while ensuring adequate and appropriate resources are available and utilized to improve and enhance operations.

Superintendent Holds Chats With
Maintenance Department
Personnel

Near the end of last school year, Superintendent Dr. Frank Till hosted two chat sessions with Maintenance Department personnel. At the chats, held at Boyd Anderson High School, the future of the department was discussed and personnel had an opportunity to ask questions.

Major points discussed included:

Until a new Executive Director is selected, Pete Tingom will serve as Interim Executive Director. He will report to Deputy Superintendent and Chief of Staff Jim Notter. When a new director is hired, Mr. Tingom will transition to Ombudsman, between principals and the Maintenance Department.

A new hiring process with union participation is being established and employees currently working out of category will be reassigned to their appropriate job roles.

The 4-10s work schedule will continue.

Plans are being developed to relieve overcrowding at Twin Lakes and reduce drive time to work sites by establishing a fourth area maintenance facility. The District is also looking at establishing satellite stockrooms.

There are plans to move air conditioning maintenance back in-house, but workers will need to be trained. Since it takes four years for workers enrolled in air conditioning apprenticeships programs to reach journeyman status, the transition will take a number of years.

The Superintendent is committed to holding quarterly chat sessions with Maintenance Department personnel until a new department management team is in place.

STRATEGIC PLAN
2010

On the next page you will find a copy of the District's new Strategic Plan.

Tear it out carefully and keep at your desk for easy reference.

The Superintendent's Leadership Summit served as the venue for the introduction of the new District Strategic Plan. The School Board of Broward County, Florida, in a series of workshops facilitated by Dr. Nancy G. Terrel, revisited the mission, goals, and beliefs of the District. District staff developed core values and a vision. Many stakeholders, including teachers, area and District staff, parents, students, and community members gave their input on the objectives that will ensure that Broward County Public Schools meets the educational needs of all students. Please look over the new plan and send your comments to Judy Zinn, Director, Continuous Quality Improvement, via CAB or Phone, (754) 321-1891.

Bit of History
Student achievement has long been a goal in Broward County Public Schools. In fact, during the 1922-23 school year, Broward County schools led the State of Florida in the number of students who graduated from grammar school and those that graduated from high school. In addition, 10 of the 20 seniors graduating from high school had already made plans to attend college while others planned to make arrangements prior to the opening of colleges in the fall. In 1923, Fort Lauderdale High also established its first Honor Society.

District Launches
Speakers Bureau
Communicating with
our Community

Realizing the best way to communicate with our community is to get out into it, the Communications & Media Relations Department has launched a new District Speakers Bureau with the theme Communicating with our Community.

As part of the District's Strategic Communications Plan, the Speakers Bureau offers businesses, community groups and organizations the opportunity to have District experts speak about Broward County Public Schools.  As an outreach project, the Bureau will increase the dissemination of positive news and information about the District and facilitate an understanding of the purpose, structures and effectiveness of our schools, programs and people.

The Speakers Bureau is made up of District professionals who will provide first-hand experiences and perspectives on education-related subjects and current issues. The Bureau takes the dissemination of information to a personal level that encourages discussion and community input and is one of many ways the District is reaching out to the community.

A Speakers Bureau information brochure provides a sampling of topics and a speakers' request form.  We hope you will be proactive and spread the word about the Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau brochure is available online at www.browardschools.com or contact the Communications & Media Relations Department at 754-321-2300.
