Around the District
Golden School & Silver School
Award Winners
Each year, schools that have shown a firm commitment to community involvement through their exemplary volunteer programs are eligible to receive Golden or Silver School Awards. For the 2003-04 school year, 156 Broward schools earned the Golden Award and 23 of the District's secondary schools earned the Silver Award (given for student community service). To qualify for the Golden School Award, a school must designate a school volunteer coordinator, train faculty in effective use of volunteer services and document volunteer service hours equal to twice the student enrollment. Six elementary schools have received this award 25 times! Congratulations to all honorees, but in particular to Hollywood Hills, Hollywood Park, Horizon, Mirror Lake, Orange Brook and Tamarac elementary schools.

Sponsorship Catalogue Earns
Silver Medallion Award
Kudos to the Community Involvement Department on receiving a Silver Medallion Award from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) for the publication of its Event Sponsorship Catalogue. The District developed a practice of seeking event sponsors to help underwrite the cost of its major recognition programs. The Sponsorship Catalogue was developed as a result of focus group research with the major sponsors of each event. Despite a soft economy for fundraising, the District enjoyed strong support last year from the community for its recognition programs; feedback from local businesses attributed this support in great part to the catalogue, which provided a snapshot of upcoming District programs.

BECON Teacher Wins State
Journalism Award
Cheryl Cammarano, a teacher at Broward Teen News (BTN) and the Broward Education Communications Network (BECON), was recently awarded a Gold Medallion Award from the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA). "It's the highest honor that FSPA gives out to teachers who contribute endlessly to high school journalism," said Haley Brueck, TV production teacher at Stoneman Douglas High School who nominated Cammarano. "Cheryl has devoted her life to this. I really admire the way she operates. She's dedicated and takes students to a different level, actually working with them in the field." Prior to working at BTN, Cammarano was a broadcast teacher at Hollywood Hills High School. She has also won awards from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and was the FSPA District 7 Journalism Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Family Counselor and Columnist, Too
Aimee Campbell-Wood
Aimee Campbell-Wood
About six years ago, Fort
Lauderdale resident
Aimee Campbell Wood and
her best friend were professional
women turned stay-at-home moms who depended upon one another for child rearing advice. Wanting to do more than just mothering and realizing there was a need for advice from experienced moms, they pitched the idea of writing a parenting advice column to the Sun-Sentinel. Their idea was accepted and the column, Two Moms, runs almost every Sunday in the Sentinel's Health & Family section. Aimee and her friend address parenting concerns ranging from sleepless babies to lazy teenagers. Their advice can also be found free-of-charge on their Web site, located at www.asktwomoms.com. Shortly after the column first appeared, Aimee began her career with the Broward School District.  For the last two years she has served as a family counselor in the Office of Prevention Programs where she focuses on Project B.L.A.S.T. (Building Lasting Attitudes and Strategies for Tomorrow). Specifically, she works on a Positive School Culture Initiative that's geared toward improving trust and respect between students and school staff.

Collaborative Program Targets
Children's Wellness

Over the next three years, fourth-and fifth-grade students in 50 public schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties will learn how to live healthier lives through the Schools of Wellness Initiative, a $1.4 million first-of-its-kind regional collaboration effort. This initiative will promote lifelong wellness by emphasizing physical activity and culturally sensitive nutrition. During the first year, students in eight Broward County Schools and eight Palm Beach County Schools will participate in the three-part program, which includes school-based physical activity, a Lifelong Wellness Program, an incentive-oriented walking component and a social marketing campaign to promote positive healthy lifestyle choices. The ultimate goal is to improve the health, academic performance and attendance of elementary school children. The program will likely serve as a model for other communities. The Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation is launching the program with various grant funds it received. The project is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Broward County School Board, Health Care District of Palm Beach County, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, North Broward Hospital District, Palm Beach County School District and the YMCA of South Palm Beach County.

The District is a member of the Mutual Assistance Support Organization which provides disaster relief support to school districts throughout the state. When Broward offered assistance, Orange County District officials responded with a request for maintenance personnel and equipment to assist in restoring their schools. The following Maintenance Department employees should be commended for their efforts: Luis Alonso, Jay Bachmann, Daniel Bartholomew, John Beavers, John Benninger, Keith Butler, Roger Childers, John Edworthy, Kenny Faulk, Ernest Garner, Joel Honeycutt, Darren Horn, Warren Howie, Ben Mallard, Kraig Martin, Mike Moore, Calvin Pierce, Michael Prevatt, Styles Ricks, Carl Robinson, Gary San Giacomo, Willie Simmons, Willie Smith, James Wesby, Nathen Williams and Walter Williams.
