Riverland Elementary Wins Broward’s Healthiest School Honors
The District’s Benefits Department, Humana Inc. and Vista Healthplans teamed together last school year to find out which elementary school could claim “healthiest school” honors. Dillard, Lakeside, Riverland and Silver Ridge elementary schools accepted the challenge. Staff members at the four schools agreed to:
• Improve their blood pressure
• Control their Body Mass Index (BMI)
• Reduce their cholesterol
• Lower their blood pressure
• Complete a wellness book
• Visit their primary care physician
Wellness seminars and pedometers kept participants at the schools focused on their goals. Each time a school board employee participated in any aspect of the competition their name was entered into a raffle for a prize. Sandra Pierre of Dillard Elementary won a $1,000 scholarship, courtesy of Vista Healthplan, which her son is using this fall at Florida Memorial College. Vickie Mooney from Silver Ridge Elementary won a $500 American Express gift card donated by Humana, Inc. She is using the money for classroom supplies.
In the end, Riverland Elementary had the highest overall score netting the $3,500 first prize. Honorable mentions went to Dillard Elementary for having the highest participation; Lakeside Elementary for losing the most weight; and Riverland for most increase in good cholesterol.
Congratulations to everyone who participated.
