Reading Across Broward
Fosters Lifelong Habit

The 20th year of Reading Across Broward – Superintendent Frank Till’s reading motivation program – was a phenomenal success, complete with monthly activities that brought reading to the forefront. Activities included a decorate-a-cake contest; creation of a favorite book computer database; Create-a-Book-Club and Win an Author Contest in partnership with the Broward County Library; King Tut Mania; Teen Author Roundtable; PoetTech Contest utilizing the District’s new BEEP portal; and the Clifford the Big Red Dog promotion at BankAtlantic Center.

Bonnie Goldstein, Media Specialist at Cypress Elementary School, was named Educator of the Year for Reading Across Broward and more than 1,000 children attended the annual Party in the Park.

Winn-Dixie recently signed on as a Partner in Education for Reading Across Broward, joining Broward County Libraries and the Sun-Sentinel in their efforts to support and promote the program. The new school year promises to be just as exciting as last year, with plans underway for programs and opportunities that motivate Broward’s students to incorporate reading into their daily lives and foster a lifelong habit of reading and library use.

Think Tank Sessions
Yield Big Results

Three “think tank” sessions held at H.D. Perry Middle School in June helped the school accomplish a variety of important tasks. Teacher leaders eagerly accepted the invitation to represent a specific group of students and tackle targeted areas of school operations.

One group addressed public relations planning for the school’s International Baccalaureate Magnet Program. They were asked to design a brochure, Web site and video that would promote the program and support recruitment efforts. A second group met to address discipline and safety procedures. Their brainstorming resulted in the creation of a school-wide, 12-week program of lessons to provide students with guidelines for respect and safety. This group also addressed a variety of teaching procedures with regard to arrival, dismissal, tardiness, passes, dress code, referrals and documentation.

Educators who participated in this process included: Valerie Rodriquez, Pamela Stephens, James Carter, Laura Bajec, Hasan Sabere, Maxine Spadaro, Jackson Self, Anthony Denis-Lay, Jaime Brown, Donnina Jones, Arlene Parnofiello, Jaqueline Carrero, Eva Lutchman, Joshua Robert and Carol Farrell.

Resource Planning
Initiative Launched

Broward County Public Schools has launched a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) initiative to integrate the payroll, budget, work orders, human resources, inventory management and purchasing processes into one streamlined system. The effort is an investment in the future that will enable the District to focus more resources on educating students. The ERP Project, a three-year initiative, will be implemented in stages to minimize its impact on those using the system and to ensure a seamless transition for employees. The ERP Project Team is dedicated to involving users of the system and soliciting feedback to ensure the project’s success. Look for future communications from the ERP Change Management Team.
