Hazardous Weather
Awareness Week
February 16 - February 22

The primary function of the District’s Safety Department is to conduct the Annual Comprehensive Fire, Casualty and Sanitation Inspection Report for every site either owned or leased by the School Board. Another responsibility is to maintain and coordinate the District’s Emergency Preparedness Program. A component of the Emergency Preparedness Program pertains to the hazardous weather conditions that we experience here in South Florida.

This issue of The 411 coincides with Florida’s Hazardous Weather Awareness Week, which is observed each February. The week is coordinated by the Florida Department of Community Affairs, Division of Emergency Management. A weather-related event is scheduled for each day of this week in an effort to raise public awareness. Lightning, hurricanes, tornados, marine hazards, temperature extremes and wild fires are the focus of these events.

A statewide school tornado drill is scheduled at 9 a.m. on the Wednesday of Hazardous Weather Awareness Week. Tornado drill procedures can be found in the Emergency Preparedness Book that is supplied to each school and available on our Web site. Please take the time to locate and review this material to be familiar with the procedures. As Florida Hazardous Weather Awareness Week 2003 approaches, additional information will be sent out to all schools.
Money Saved,
Mold Prevented With High-Tech Maintenance System

Preventative measures, efficiency and cost effectiveness are integral to every world-class maintenance organization and the School Board of Broward County is no different. That’s why the District recently employed the EMS Andover System, which allows maintenance personnel to access the HVAC and refrigeration system as well as view the kilowatts used in association with these and other electrically powered equipment in each of the District’s schools. That, in turn, will enable the District to conserve energy through monitoring energy usage, ensure the most cost effective and best practices and be proactive in its approach to maintenance.

Maintenance staff members are already busy monitoring the HVAC system levels, including supply and return chilled water temperatures, on/off times, room temperature, humidity levels, power output and history logs. One of the by-products of monitoring the HVAC system in this prescribed manner is the reduction of humidity, which is a leading cause of mold and mildew in our schools.

The success of the program is reliant upon working in tandem with school-based staff; future plans for the program will involve specialized training in the use and related benefits of the EMS Andover System. In the long run, the implementation of this system and the maintenance programs that evolve from it will result in saved energy dollars that can instead be used toward our real goal: education.
