16 Schools to Benefit From
$1.3 Million Reading Grants

As part of the Governor’s “Just Read, Florida!” initiative, the District will receive approximately $1.3 million in state grant funds to implement a Reading Coaches Model program. Those funds will enable 16 schools to hire an additional reading coach who will be trained in scientifically based reading practices. Once trained, the coaches will provide support to teachers and principals to help every student become a successful, independent reader. Only 32 Florida school districts and lab schools received an award, with Broward’s $1,303,240 being the largest amount given to any school district.

The primary responsibilities of the new reading coaches include:
• Providing guidance to school-based literacy leadership teams
• Improving instructional practices in reading
• Assessing and evaluating student reading skills using benchmarks that reflect the Sunshine State
Standards
• Working with classroom teachers to assist struggling readers

The goal of the program is for the schools to see substantial improvements in the performances of struggling readers. This one-year grant will be aligned and continued through future proposals to the program. The District also plans to enhance its existing model, which provides a stable resource for professional development, progress monitoring and student data analysis throughout the schools to generate improvement in reading instruction and reading achievement.

Online Training that Meets the Needs of Today’s Educators
The Program,Development and Alignment Department hit the ground running this school year with its extensive list of free course offerings for Broward educators via Virtual University. If you have never taken an online class before, you are in for the time of your life! Just picture yourself in one of the following
scenarios:
Just imagine …

...sitting at home Sunday night, bathrobe on, a cup of steaming black coffee at your side and receiving in-service points on a topic of your choice,

...getting a late-night e-mail from a district curriculum supervisor who is suggesting a personal pedagogical alternative for that difficult student in your classroom,

...networking with your educational peers throughout the county and exchanging creative teaching ideas,

... getting a brief update on a mathematics skill you have forgotten, but must teach the following week,

...obtaining the most current information and updates on the new science FCAT,

...accessing just the right graphic organizer and not having to purchase (on your own) a whole book and

...receiving in-service points for certificate renewal and never, ever having to leave your home
These scenarios and other similar ones are occurring daily throughout Broward. Teachers have enthusiastically gravitated to the online training format. A variety of courses are available for teachers at every level and every content area. It’s as simple as typing in this web address:

www.broward.k12.fl.us/ci/virtual_university

and searching through the many course offerings provided. Once you’ve chosen a course, simply print out a registration form and send it to Program Development, 13th floor, KCW. The rest is easy! You will be contacted a week before your selected course begins with your log on name and password. Sometime during that first week of class, you will log on (at a time that’s convenient for you) and introduce yourself to your class.

Our fine staff of quality, master teachers is available to support you throughout

your online adventure. The universities are doing it and now you can be part of the E-learning momentum and never have to leave your own backyard!
