Construction continues to enable the School Board of Broward
County to accommodate its growing student population. Recent
projects include:
Endeavour Primary Learning
Center
Broward County Public Schools recently broke ground on a
new, first-of-its-kind, school project that has been named
Endeavour Primary Learning Center. The City of Lauderhill
will be home to the new school near Circle Site. The project’s
design was commissioned by the Florida Department of Education
to be used as a prototype for future primary learning centers
throughout the state. Expected to open for the 2003-2004
school year, Endeavour Primary Learning Center will serve
approximately 500 students in Kindergarten through third
grade.
Driftwood Elementary School
A major construction project at Driftwood Elementary combines
building demolition, renovation and new construction on
the school’s original building, which was constructed
in 1959. Groundbreaking was held on November 13, 2002 for
a state-of-the-art media center, which will become the focal
point for the school. Four new buildings with 13 classrooms
will be constructed surrounding the central courtyard. The
overall master plan includes the new Driftwood Community
Center and ball fields. The City of Hollywood, home to Driftwood
Elementary, will also soon begin construction of the Driftwood
Swimming Pool on the school site. |
District Participating in
“Fresh From Florida Salad Bar” Pilot
The District’s Food and Nutrition Services
Department has been selected as one of four in the state
to participate in the “Fresh From Florida Salad Bar
Pilot.” While the primary goal is education, there
is also a consumption goal: to increase student consumption
of fruits and vegetables, particularly those crops grown
in Florida. Funding for the pilot project is provided through
a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Agriculture.
Results from the pilot will serve as a model for the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s national effort to feature
more fruits and vegetables in schools. USDA’s Food
and Nutrition Service reports that only 14% of school-aged
children meet the recommended number of daily servings for
fruits and only 17% meet the target for vegetables.
The Florida pilot is aimed to create a model that can be
replicated by other districts. Three schools in Broward
County are involved in the project: Fox Trail Elementary,
Silver Trail Middle and Stranahan High. Check out future
issues of The 411 for an update on this ambitious project.y
