Three Named Social Studies Teachers of the Year
Three Broward teachers have been selected as Social Studies Teachers of the Year by the Florida Council for the Social Studies. The awards were presented at a banquet held during the group's annual conference held recently in Orlando. Honorees include (elementary level): Bari Laakmann, Riverside Elementary School (middle school level): Ruthann Paul-Suess, Sawgrass Springs Middle School (high school level) and Mary Singletary, Dillard High School. The three teachers were selected for their innovative teaching methods and dedication to students.

Kiss a Skunk for the Needy
Linda Butler's eighth grade Sentinel Team at Plantation Middle School recently raised almost $2,000 to help 27 needy families during the holidays. They did it by employing several creative fundraising methods including a canned food drive (which brought in more than 900 cans of food) and a pizza sale. But the most profitable fundraiser was the "Kiss a Skunk" contest. A jar labeled with each administrator's name was placed in the cafeteria. Students "voted" for the administrator they most wanted to see kiss a skunk by placing donations in the jars. Eighth grade assistant principal Kwan Drake was the lucky winner and kissed "Mocha" the skunk to the delight of students. A field trip to the mall enabled students to purchase gifts with the money raised so that the needy families not only received baskets of food, but wrapped presents as well.

School Psychology Week Celebrated, Professional Honored
The Broward Association of School Psychologists (BASP) participated in several activities in early December in celebration of School Psychology Week. Several presentations were made by school psychologists to highlight the many services they are trained to provide. BASP recognized the current recipient of the Phil Seat Award, which is bestowed in honor of Phil Seat who was a prominent clinical consultant with Broward Student Services for more than 20 years. The current recipient chosen by the Broward County School Psychologists as the colleague who perpetuates the qualities Dr. Seat exemplified is Diane Wilen. Diane has been a Bilingual School Psychologist in Broward County since 1975. During her career, she has made more than 40 presentations across the nation to colleagues, teachers and parents and has authored or co-authored over 20 articles on issues related to working with culturally and linguistically diverse school populations. Diane has been recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists and the Florida Association of School Psychologists.
Bit of History
In 1920 Deerfield Beach's "old school house" was constructed replacing a wood-frame structure. A bond issue of $12,000 provided construction funding for the new masonry building that was constructed in what was the center of Deerfield at that time.

A school day in Deerfield School mirrored the experience of many students of that time in Broward County. Desks were made of wood and wrought iron and were placed in rows in front of the teacher's wooden desk. School hours were 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. School was called to order by a large hand-tolled bell and discipline maintained with the help of rulers and paddles. Upper grades met in one room and lower grades in another separated by a folding divider. Many children walked home for lunch. Graduating was a major event in the life of a student and his or her family. Each student took great pains to write an essay and practice reading it out loud in preparation for graduation day.
