Jane Koszoru, Broward’s Teacher of the Year 2004, has been selected as a member of the 2004 class of inductees to the National Teachers Hall of Fame. Her formal induction will take place at a banquet in Emporia, Kansas and a celebration in Washington, D.C. in June. The Hall of Fame honors five teachers each year who have demonstrated commitment and dedication to teaching and the teaching profession. In addition to a plaque, Ms. Koszoru received a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a Broward student who is planning to pursue a degree in education.

Volunteer Services Coordinator Anne French received the Adele Graham Award presented by the Florida Association of Partners In Education. Named for the wife of former Governor and current Senator Bob Graham, the award is given to individuals who have made major contributions to volunteer and partner programs throughout the state. Anne French has led the district’s Volunteer Services department for more than 25 years and is recognized throughout the state as a leader in volunteer management and the development of school volunteer services programs.

McFatter Technical High School has been selected by the Florida Department of Education to represent the state at the 12th Annual Model Schools Conference in Washington, D.C. Only one high school in the state is selected to represent all high schools in Florida at this annual event. The selection is based on overall proven success in assisting all students to achieve continuous growth toward proficiency and beyond.

The team from Instructional Staffing was a double winner at the Superintendent’s Quality Award Event earning an exemplary rating for its project and a first place for its storyboard. On April 1st, more than 300 people attended the Superintendent’s Quality Award ceremony held at the Signature Grand. Forty teams competed in the event showcasing their best practices. Projects were based on Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), an essential element of Quality and Continuous Improvement.

• Sawgrass Elementary -School -1st Place

Dania Elementary Principal Kathy DiBona recently received the State of Florida Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Leadership in Drug and Anti-Violence Education Award from Informed Families and the Florida Family Partnership, a division of the National Family Partnership. The award is given to one leader each year that has made significant contributions in the area of drug prevention and safe schools and families with a focus on education.

Violet Campbell, a teacher at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School, has been invited to serve as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Parent Consortia for the Greater Southeast. She was chosen because of her expertise and strong commitment to the children of Florida. As part of the Parent Assistance Centers created under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the goals of the group are to provide parents with the tools they need to understand their state’s accountability system and increase their knowledge of public school choice and services.

Five employees were the winners in the Benefits Department’s Employee Annual Physical Exam Voucher Program.

Humana winners included Cindy Isabel Garcia, Guidance Counselor at Nob Hill Elementary School ($300); Charles Mione, Jr., Pool Operator in Student Activities ($500); and Rosalie Goldberg, Reading Teacher at Westpine Middle School ($500). Vista winners were Jack Cooper, Senior Project Manager, Facilities and Construction Management and Kenneth Bergmann, Auto Teacher, Atlantic Technical Center. Each received a treadmill. Four Broward County Schools’ employees are enjoying new DVD players thanks to the Benefits Department. The employees’ names were entered into a drawing when they filled out the Employee Self-Service Open Enrollment Survey. Congratulations to: Jacqueline Roselione, Speech Teacher, Fox Trail Elementary; Phyllis Gelman, Reading Resource Specialist, Nova Blanche Foreman; Janet Westervelt, Secretary, Northeast High; and Brian Pietrzak, Instructor, College Academy.

Hallandale High’s Lamont Snyder is one of five band teachers across America to receive the prestigious Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation award. The Foundation supports music education and its many benefits through the donation and repair of musical instruments to under-served schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide.

Driftwood Middle School has been selected by the Magnet Schools of America as a Magnet School of Distinction. The school will be honored at the 22nd Magnet Schools of America Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. This prestigious award is presented to schools demonstrating curriculum innovation and a commitment to high academic standards.
