United Way Campaign Underway

Broward School District strives to help the community

The School Board of Broward County has always been a major support system for United Way of Broward County, and this year we are striving to donate more money than ever before.

You may not be aware that one in every five Broward County residents is affected by United Way agency services. Last year alone, almost 96,000 people dialed First Call for Help to be directed to an agency that could assist them with various social issues.

With your help, we can continue to help United Way fund the 106 programs through 60 agencies they currently support. These agencies provide assistance in many areas in the social services field, from helping the homeless to providing training for someone without sight.   Kids in Distress, for example provides therapeutic services to about 800 children and families each year. Lighthouse of Broward County is able to provide assistance to more than 2,500 visually impaired people enhancing their independence, productivity and quality of life. These are just a few examples of how United Way of Broward County helps the community lead better lives, and United Way greatly appreciates the continued support of the School Board.

This year The Broward Education Foundation may be designated to receive your donation, so you can choose to support programs for the employees and students of Broward County Public Schools.

If you have not already made a donation, please consider doing so.   The District's 2003 United Way Campaign concludes November 14.   If you have any questions about United Way of Broward County, contact your school ambassador or visit their Web site at www.unitedwaybroward.org.

Bit of History

Educators had ling pushed for frontier children to attend school regularly, but reality dictated that children assist their farm families in the fields. For that reason regular school attendance was low. But, in 1919, shortly after World War I, compulsory education was mandated. This, coupled with more highly trained teachers who considered teaching a career, increased the quality of education in Broward County.

DISTRICT'S CHANGE TO 754 AREA CODE CONTINUES

Progress continues on the plan to align all school and district phone numbers under the new 754 area code.   As of September 30, 2003, 21 elementary schools, six middle schools, five high schools, seven centers, and 30 departments have been successfully converted to the new numbering plan.

On December 29, 2003 the KCW building will begin its change to the new 754 area code numbers.   This conversion will take place while many of the KCW staff members are out for the winter holiday.   All of the new numbers will be active when staff returns on January 5, 2004.   BellSouth will have technicians available at the KCW building on that date to assist with any issues that may arise.

It is important that once a school or department is notified of its new phone number that it begin notifying all contacts of the phone number change.

When complete, the aligning of telephone numbers under the 754 area code is expected to save the District nearly $1 million a year and the new numbers will also allow for future growth at a reduced price. For more information and an updated list of new phone numbers and FAX numbers, visit the project Web site at www.browardschools.com/info/phones.
