passed a resolution, lending its support to the nation’s
setting of September 11, 2002, as a Patriotic Observance:
A Day to Remember.
Italian to be Offered at Watkins
Elementary and Pines Middles School
Students at Watkins Elementary and Pines
Middle School will have the opportunity to study Italian and
learn about Italian culture thanks to a new partnership between
the District and the Consulate General of Italy and the Organizzazione
per la Diffusione della Lingua Italiana, Inc. (ODLI). Through
this agreement the District will work with ODLI to provide
the schools with the resources that provide training, curriculum
and technical support in the development of an Italian program
including bilingual and bicultural programs as well as the
preservation of the rich Italian heritage found throughout
the South Florida area.
New Grant Agreement with South
Florida Annenberg Challenge Approved
The South Florida
Annenberg Challenge has provided grants to schools in the
tri-county area to link schools with business partners. Two
elementary schools - Dillard and Cresthaven - have been selected
by Annenberg to participate in a three-year project. Dillard
Elementary will partner with Admiralty Bank and the Broward
County Urban League to carry out its "Soaring High –
One Child at a Time" project, which focuses on improving
student performance and meeting School Improvement Plan goals
through academic camps, Saturday tutoring, increasing classroom
libraries, conducting a staff development/planning retreat
prior to the start of school and recognizing student attendance
and good behavior. Cresthaven Elementary, in partnership with
Washington Mutual, will focus on improving reading performance,
providing after school and Saturday tutoring, improving parent
involvement and increasing teacher collaboration and data-driven
decision making.
