The 411 - News You Can Use About Broward Schools
Broward County Public Schools

The leaves are beginning to turn colors, a chilly wind is in the air, the summer heat is long gone - does this sound like South Florida in September? Well not exactly, however, the arrival of fall throughout the country means only one thing: football! In Broward County, you can catch the best game in town at your local high school stadium or at Lockhart Stadium, the district operated facility for high school football. Once again, Broward County teams will vie for county and state supremacy. So, at a price that every family can afford, there are a few games we suggest you catch:

To highlight the action of each Game of the Week, the District’s Web site (www.browardschools.com) will feature game highlights as well as player and coach interviews as part of NetTV. Just visit the District Web site and click on the Sports Desk option for NetTV. And it won’t just be football - as the athletic seasons change, so too will be the sports highlighted on NetTV.

October 4th - Buck Stadium
Stoneman-Douglas Eagles vs. Deerfield Beach Bucks
Joe Redmond returns to the sidelines as Bucks Head Coach. The Bucks feature three star players: senior wide receiver Brooks Turner (6’0", 200), linebacker Jeffery Willis (6’1", 220) and defensive end Marc Abraham (6’4", 240). Head Coach Jim Matheson led the Eagles to a district title and the Class 6A quarterfinals last year - the best season in Eagle history. This year’s team is led by tight end/defensive end Dan Lane (6’3", 205). Dan is very strong (300 lb. bench), has exceptional quickness (4.65) and the ability to make plays. He also gets it done in the classroom, holding down a 4.3 GPA.

October 11th - South Broward Stadium
Miramar Patriots vs. Hallandale Chargers
The past two years have been the finest in Hallandale High’s 26-year history. The Chargers made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The Patriots had the 5th ranked offensive team in Broward County last year. Veteran Patriots Head Coach Willie Hendricks will have his team ready for this rivalry game.

October 17th - Colt Stadium
Coral Springs Colts vs. Stoneman Douglas Eagles
Bill Brown has quietly put the passion and excitement back in Colt football. The Colts are coming off a banner year with their first playoff appearance in a decade. Make no mistake - this is a game with major implications and serious bragging rights in Northwest Broward. The question is, can the Colts stop the Eagles explosive Wing-T offense? Half-time features two of the best high school bands in the state.
October 25th - Bengal Stadium
Stranahan Dragons vs. Piper Bengals
Coach Doug Gatewood continues to build the Bengals into a county power. Last year, the Bengals defeated Plantation and Dillard to win a District title. They are an offensive threat with the ball, leading the county in passing offense last year. The Dragons, under Coach Vince Schiavo, are known for their hard-hitting defense. When opposites attract, something is bound to give.

November 1st - South Broward Stadium
Glades Central vs. Hallandale Chargers
Expect more than 1,000 fans to drive from Lake Okeechobee to South Broward Stadium for this critical game. Glades fans are considered the wildest and most supportive in the state. Bob Woods’ Chargers lost on the road last year to Glades Central and in the state playoffs against eventual champion Rockledge. This game will determine the District 3-A champion.

Other key games this season include:
November 8th - Western High
Cooper City Cowboys vs. Western Wildcats
The veteran statesman of Broward coaching, Jack Chapman, leads the Wildcats under senior QB Chris Patullo (6’0", 175) in this annual rivalry game. Cowboy Coach Jim Elder has turned the Cowboy fortunes around the past few years. The winner of this game wins the Hog Bowl trophy and the losing team’s principal kisses the pig. Yuck!

November 9th - Lockhart Stadium
Dillard Panthers vs. Blanche Ely Tigers
Are you ready to boogie and dance the night away? Then make sure you’re at Lockhart Stadium for the annual Soul Bowl. The history of Broward football began in the 1950s between Dillard and Blanche Ely. This game is more about the celebration of life than a contest of wills. At half-time, the battle of the bands takes center stage. Last year, more than 15,000 fans attended the Soul Bowl.

December 6th - Lockhart Stadium
BCAA All-Star Game
The top 100 Broward County Athletic Association high school football players take center stage in the 6th Annual All-Star game. This game, sponsored by the Sun-Sentinel, culminates ten days of practice, activities and events for the players. College scouts from throughout the country descend upon Broward to offer collegiate scholarships to Broward’s best. This game also features the 200-member strong BCAA Marching All-Star band.

All games begin at 7 p.m.
