Seven Down, Seven to Go
District Opens Seven Schools, Construction Underway on Seven Others
With the advent of a new school year, the local papers were full of coverage about Broward County’s newest elementary, middle and high schools. In all, seven newly constructed schools opened their doors to students this fall and four more will soon follow. Eleven school openings during the 2002/2003 school year surpasses the District’s former record, achieved last year when eight new facilities were welcomed into the Broward County family.

Six Elementary Schools
• Margate celebrated the opening of Liberty Elementary School, which is located on Banks Road. The school is designed similarly to Silver Shores Elementary.
Manatee Bay Elementary School is situated on S.W. 36th Street in the burgeoning city of Weston.
• Lauderdale Lakes’ newest school is Park Lakes Elementary School, located on
State Road 7.
Sunset Lakes Elementary School is located in Miramar. Its timely completion greatly eases the swelling student population at nearby Panther Run and Silver Lakes elementary schools.
Rock Island Elementary School is slated to open in Fort Lauderdale in January of 2003.
Silver Shores Elementary School is scheduled to open in Miramar in January of 2003.

Four Middle Schools
Millennium Middle School, Tamarac’s first and only middle school, also opened this fall. It
features a prototype architectural design and serves the needs of students in grades six through
eight.
New Renaissance Middle School was designed incorporating state-of-the-art technology. Its
200,000 square foot facility serves students in grades six through eight and also doubles as a hurricane shelter.
Westglades Middle School is expected to open in Parkland in October of this year. The
opening of Westglades will ease overcrowding at nearby Forest Glen, Coral Springs,
Ramblewood and Sawgrass middle schools.
• A yet-to-be-named middle school (currently referred to as "Middle School GG") will be completed in February in Fort Lauderdale and students will call that school home during the 2003/2004
school year.

One High School
• Broward County’s newest high school and the first to open since Charles Flanagan High in
1996 is Cypress Bay High School in Weston.
The 11 new schools opening during the 2002/2003 school year will provide 31,000 additional student stations for use by Broward County Schools’ students.

Two additional high schools recently held groundbreaking ceremonies. Pompano Beach High School, a 185,000 square foot facility replacement school for students in grades nine-12 is expected to open in time for the beginning of the 2003/2004 school year. It will retain the school’s 50-year-old classic gymnasium and intimate auditorium. High School "III", underway in Miramar, and the Endeavour Primary Learning Center in Lauderhill are slated to open during the 2003/2004 school year.
