2006 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Barbara Gregory -- Employee of the Year

Barbara Gregory
Barbara Gregory's motto of "family first" led her from being a parent volunteer to serving in various positions in the PTA to becoming a District employee. It also ultimately led her to being named the District's Employee of the Year for 2005 at a recent ceremony held at the Best Western Rolling Hills in Davie.

While volunteering at her children's school (Bennett Elementary), Barbara's work ethic and ability to communicate with the public was recognized and she was offered a position as a clerk/typist in the front office. Attending training whenever it was available, Barbara was promoted to the position of the principal's secretary and later confidential secretary. Her organizational skills and capability for handling the various crises that can occur has made her indispensable. She has developed and executed many systems and procedures that helped the school and its office to function at optimal levels. Barbara is also her school's Benefits and Substitute Coordinator, back-up Payroll and PAF Processor.

When technology was introduced into Broward schools, she became the go-to person for anything having to do with computers. She is sought out Districtwide for her ability to create databases and work wonders with the most difficult computer programs. Her observations and input resulted in system changes that increased both capacity and efficiency.

Barbara's greatest strength is comforting children. She recognizes individual needs and her soothing ways have been able to calm even the most distressed youngsters. Her desk is a safe haven for students whenever needed. She has also assisted families in getting access to the community services they need. Through her personal contacts in the community, she even successfully managed to help a family get their son a pair of desperately needed eyeglasses. Barbara is loved and respected by the students, the community and her colleagues.

Pompano Beach High School Dedicated
On January 13th, current and former students, teachers, staff members, District personnel and area dignitaries turned out to help celebrate the official dedication and ribbon-cutting of the new Pompano Beach High School - International Affairs and Informational Technology. The former school's historical auditorium and gymnasium were remodeled, expanded and incorporated into this replacement school.

Pompano Beach High School Dedicated
The facility is the District's only totally complete, state-of-the-art magnet school. Currently, it is attended by more than 1,000 students studying global studies, international finance and law, international business systems, foreign language (French, Spanish & Japanese), television production and Web site design. Plans call for the school to eventually accommodate as many as 1,500 students.

Students lead the day of celebration, which culminated in the spectacular release of white doves symbolizing the school's official re-opening and renewing. The students then provided tours to guests during a reception held in the District's first wireless library.
A BIT OF HISTORY

By 1925, America had discovered Fort Lauderdale. During a 10-month period, Fort Lauderdale's population nearly tripled - from 5,625 to 15,915. This increase in population, coupled with Hollywood's soaring population, led to an increase in the construction of canals, roads, homes and commercial buildings. It also had a major impact on the school system.

As the population increased, construction of schools also increased. Among the new schools opening were Oakland Park Elementary School in January, 1925 and Deerfield Beach Elementary in 1926. Deerfield Beach Elementary remains one of the oldest schools in Broward County utilized today.
