Before and After School Students Collect Supplies for Indian River Students
The rash of hurricanes that tore through our state last fall hit Indian River County hard. While initial relief efforts were good and attention was focused on helping those affected by the storms, as time passed, so did the focus of helping those in need.
A call came from Indian River County Public Schools for help in collecting needed school supplies for the district's students. Barbara Flynn, Coordinator of the District's Before and After School Childcare, sprang into action. She had students enrolled in her program begin collecting pencils, pens, paper, books, backpacks and other items typically used by students. After the items were collected, they were sent to five of Broward's high schools where students packed the supplies into 51 boxes! On January 3rd, the supplies were loaded on a truck and driven north by Merrie Meyers-Kershaw, Broward School District's Director of Community Involvement, and Rick Reiss, an administrative site staff member. Representatives from Indian River County Public Schools were very grateful for the donations.

On December 1st 2004, thousands of Broward County students and their parents flocked to the Broward County Convention Center to attend an exposition-style showcase of the District's 40+ magnet schools. The event featured displays of literature, hands-on and interactive activities and information on everything from applications to transportation. Staff helped process applications for parents of elementary, middle and high school students who attended. There was even a bank of computers available so parents could apply on-line and translators for Spanish-, Portuguese- and Haitian Creole-speaking visitors.
