District CIO Makes Top 100
List Vijay Sonty, the District’s Chief Information Officer for Educational Technology Services, has been recognized as one of Computerworld’s Premier 100 IT (information technology) Leaders for 2007. Computerworld is known worldwide as the premier source for news, information and opinion on the critical technology and management issues affecting senior technology professionals.
The article states that, “This year’s class of honorees is characterized by a diversity that demonstrates the value of unique backgrounds and approaches in building an outstanding IT organization. Yet, what these individuals have in common is an expertise born of hard work and an intangible leadership quality they can tap to successfully champion IT, not only as a business enabler, but as a business influencer.”
Sonty is honored as an IT executive who has championed the many technology initiatives outlined in the District’s IT Blueprint and Education Technology Plan. He has accomplished this by mentoring and motivating employees, envisioning innovative solutions to business challenges and effectively managing and executing IT strategies.
Sonty’s transition from project manager to IT leader 12 years ago marked his shift from a tactical mind-set to a strategic one. He identifies strategic thinking as the differentiator between a CIO and an effective CIO. He believes that IT at a strategic level involves many players collaboratively working together to develop a convincing plan that takes into consideration the needs of the District’s 273 public and charter schools, over 260,000 students and 19,000 teachers.l
