Certified Custodial Graduation Ceremony Held

Ninety-three Facilities Service staffers, who completed a 61-hour Professional Custodial course and 48 who completed a 39-hour Master Custodial course, were honored at a graduation ceremony held at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center. Certified custodial training programs have been in place since 1989. Modern buildings require modern equipment, chemicals and cleaning techniques. With this in mind, Facilities Service personnel must be technically proficient, able to work well within a diverse workforce and meet the demands of an ever-changing educational environment. These employees play a vital role in the operational health of our schools and support the District’s belief that a safe and secure environment is essential for teaching and learning. Congratulations and hats off to all of the graduates!

Dillard High Ceremony Starts 100th Anniversary Celebration

Dillard High School turns 100 this year and the school marked the milestone with a commitment ceremony to kick-off a yearlong centennial celebration. The event – which was free and open to all – included performances by students from Dillard’s music and dance departments and presentations from Principal Merceda Stanley and community leaders. Attendees were treated to tours of recent campus additions and renovations, as well as light refreshments.

“This is quite a milestone and we plan to commemorate the 100th year of the opening of Dillard High School with several events this year,” says Principal Stanley. “The kick-off event was our way of introducing our centennial committee and honoring the accomplishments of our students, alumni and faculty.”

The roots of Dillard High are 100 years deep, growing out of the first school for black students in Fort Lauderdale. Ten students attended the first classes in the one-room wooden building, which was designated at the time as the “Colored School.” It was located at N.W. 3rd Avenue between Broward Boulevard and N.W. Second Street and was later named Dillard High School. Today, the school’s campus is located at 2501 N.W. 11th Street and it is home to over 2,100 students and countywide magnet programs for technology and the performing and visual arts.
