Teachers Visit
Holocaust Memorial
Museum
This year, spring break had a whole different focus for 25 Broward County educators. Teachers took time from their vacation and the demands of their classrooms to become students themselves as they embarked on an Educator Study Trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.
Broward’s teachers gathered for intensive training and the opportunity to visit one of the most respected museums and Holocaust education centers in the world.
Leading the teachers as they explored the museum were Linda Medvin, a Holocaust Studies Resource Teacher in the District’s Multicultural Department, and Dr. Rose Gatens, Director of The Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University. Ernest Kan, a survivor of the Holocaust, accompanied the educators and shared his experiences during the three-day trip.
In addition to the opportunity to visit the Museum, the teachers attended two training sessions prior to leaving for Washington D. C. and one session after the group’s return. Classroom strategies, curricula, and materials were provided so that the teachers may bring the lessons of the Holocaust to their classrooms and students.
The trip was funded through a grant from League for Educational Awareness of the Holocaust (LEAH) in collaboration with The Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University. This is the first time that LEAH has sponsored an Educator Study Trip for Broward Teachers.
Students Assist
in Refurbishing
Burrowing Owl Habitat
Seventh grade students in science and language arts classes at Pioneer Middle School assisted a representative from the National Wildlife Federation in Georgia, trained habitat specialists and personnel from both the City of Cooper City and Broward County in refurbishing a Burrowing Owl habitat in front of their school. The hands-on project helped to teach the students the importance of protecting the environment.
The habitat is now a National Wildlife Federation Certified Schoolyard Habitat. In addition, the school was one of only 10 in the nation to be selected to be visited by actress Brie Larson and director Wil Shriner from the movie HOOT, which is based on the environmentally sensitive teen novel by author Carl Hiaasen. The actress, director and author all took part in a special assembly at the school.
