Metro Tech Services (formerly known as Metrology) is a three-pronged department charged with repairing the District’s out-of-warranty computers and business machines and providing on-site technical support. Under the Quality and Customer Service umbrella in ETS, Metro Tech Services (MTS) operates under the direction of Department Supervisor Mike McCutcheon.

MTS employees repair computers, printers, poster printers, laminating equipment, punch and binding equipment and other tech-related equipment not under warranty. They also repair laptop damages that are not covered by warranty and refurbish surplus computers for use in the District’s Digital Divide program. In addition to McCutcheon, the department has 14 technicians, two lead persons and a customer service specialist. MTS is divided into three areas: Metro CR, Metro BM/KR/DD and Metro FASTeam.

• The eight technicians and one lead person assigned to the Metro CR unit are dedicated to repairing out-of-warranty and non-warranty computer equipment, including Dell and Apple desktop and laptop computers, printers and servers.
• Metro BM/KR/DD has two technicians and a lead person who repair out-of-warranty and non-warranty business machine equipment and KRONOS timekeeping stations; they also refurbish computers for use in the Digital Divide program.
• The Metro FASTeam is comprised of four technicians who respond to support requests and assist school-based technical support staff in implementing technical usage plans at their sites.

So far this school year, Metro Tech Services has performed nearly 6,000 computer repairs and 300 business machine repairs. They also refurbished 250 computers that were distributed to families through the Digital Divide program. The FASTeam has logged in excess of 100 site visits, addressing 5,000-plus machines. “Many of our technicians have been with the department for 10 years or more,” says McCutcheon.“They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to every service request response.”

500 Students Participate in ESOL
Academic Competition
A year’s worth of preparation culminated into a day of excitement, as more than 500 English Language Learners (ELLs) participated in the 2007 ESOL Academic Competition. ELLs from 35 middle and high schools descended upon the Nova High School campus to demonstrate their creativity and proficiency in English. The competition provided a variety of exciting and challenging experiences for students. Students participated in events such as impromptu speaking, declamation, original oratory, talent, art and writing. Additionally, middle school students wowed the judges with their ability to meet the challenges in the spelling bee competition. The competition led to a better understanding of the curriculum and the cultures of people throughout the nation and the world and encouraged the developing of organizational, research and problem solving skills. Students participating were recognized with ribbons and those with the highest scores in each category received either medals or trophies. Flanagan High School’s step teams, Prestigious and Prodigy, provided entertainment. Support for the event was received from Pearson Learning and Thomson-Heinle.
