Award for Environmental Excellence

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Students Attend Ethics in Workplace Seminar
A series of activities recently provided 100 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School seniors with the opportunity to examine the role of ethics in the decision-making process and explore the application of ethical values to career fields and jobs. The school’s annual Ethical Decision-Making in the Workplace and Society seminar allowed students to work in small groups facilitated by the school’s business partners. At the end of the day-long seminar, the students were presented with an ethical dilemma for which they developed a solution using the principles they learned. According to John M. Congemi, the school’s assistant principal, “Parents, school administrators and business partners feel this seminar provided a springboard for the many choices students will have to make in life.”

Magnet Teacher Nationally Recognized for Artificial Reef Project
Allan Phipps
Allan Phipps
Sea World, Busch Gardens and Fujifilm recently named South Plantation High School magnet teacher Allan Phipps Environmental Educator of the Year. He earned the honor for his efforts in overseeing an artificial coral reef project that involved magnet students from his school and other community members. Phipps – who received a $5,000 prize – helped deploy 30 concrete reef boards into the Intracoastal Waterway off Golden Beach. These environmentally sound reef balls help construct artificial reefs to protect shorelines from erosion, provide extra habitat for fish, repair damage to existing reefs and create locations for dives that assist with eco-tourism.
