Sawgrass Springs Middle Earns $10,000
Award for Environmental Excellence
In recognition of the outstanding efforts of students and teachers working at the
grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment, Sawgrass Springs
Middle School was awarded $10,000 by Sea World, Busch Gardens and Fujifilm
for environmental excellence. The environmental science magnet school strives
to provide education both within and beyond classroom walls. Projects the
students have undertaken include fabricating a rubber walkway constructed
with recycled materials, planting a butterfly garden in the shape of a butterfly,
creating a preserve on campus to aid in the preservation of four gopher tortoises
suffering from upper respiratory tract disease, constructing a wetland pond to
house native species of aquatic plants and animals and creating a garden center
to ensure the propagation
