Jump Rope 4 Heart event,
physical education coach and
event organizer Jay Parush
promised the top four moneyraisers
that they could cut his
hair in a Mohawk style if the

J.P. Taravella’s Les Miserables Honored By State
Thespian Society
J.P. Taravella High School’s Drama Department was honored by the Florida State
Thespian Society for its student presentation of Les Miserables, which was selected
as one of two musicals to be presented on the main stage at Festival 2007 in April. The
purpose of the event – which is held at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center – is to
showcase the outstanding theatre productions in secondary schools throughout the
state of Florida. To raise funds to pay for the trip to Tampa, students held two benefit
performances at the school. This marks the third time the school’s drama department
has been recognized. Its productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and On the
Town were honored in 2005 and 1996, respectively.

Career and Technical
Education Conference
Draws 750 Students
On a Wednesday in mid-April, almost 750 students who are enrolled
in the Academy of Finance, Hospitality and Tourism , Information
Technology or in the Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship took
part in a Career and Technical Education Student Conference held at
the Broward County Convention Center. The event was held to provide
high school students with a perspective into the business world and
stress the importance of career preparation. The students listened to
presentations from motivational speakers, industry experts, admissions
officers and college professors. They also attended breakout sessions,
roundtable sessions and panel presentations. Various exhibitors
– including savings institutions, cruise lines, armed forces and
institutions of higher learning – were on hand. Each volunteered their
time to look over student resumes, give dress for success tips, assist
with public speaking suggestions and provide successful interviewing
techniques.
The conference, in its ninth year, was sponsored by the Broward County
Public Schools Career, Technical and Adult/Community Education
Department; Citigroup; American Express; Greater Fort Lauderdale
Convention and Visitors Bureau; DeVry University; Citrix, Broward
Community College, area businesses and postsecondary institutions.
Students are selected to participate because of their association with
the career preparatory program.
