Workers Return After Month in St. Lucie County

In the wake of Hurricane Jeanne, 83 employees from the District's Physical Plant Operations Division (formerly called the Maintenance Department); the Facilities & Construction Division and the Building Department volunteered to travel to St. Lucie County to assist in recovery efforts. Earlier in the hurricane season, employees from the District assisted Orange County Public Schools for a week following Hurricane Charley. This time, however, damage was so extensive that 20 of Broward's workers remained in St. Lucie County for 24 days.

Broward County Public Schools is a member of the Mutual Assistance Support Organization in the state that provides disaster support to other school districts in need. Broward School District officials offered to provide support for those districts affected by Hurricane Jeanne. District administrative personnel traveled to St. Lucie County to assess the damage and determined what repairs were needed. Then workers transported heavy equipment including front-end loaders, Bobcats, dump trucks, pickup trucks, mowers and chain saws which they used in assisting with the recovery effort. Broward's workers put in a total of 7,699 work hours clearing downed trees and debris; helping to restore electrical and fire alarm service and making needed repairs to St. Lucie County Public Schools.

Before the District's workers headed home, St. Lucie School District officials, including Superintendent Michael J. Lannon and Board member Kathryn Hensley, said thank you by treating them to a Bar-B-Q. The following employees should be congratulated for their hard work:
