BCPS Senior Recognized at the White House Beating the Odds Summit

Tuesday, July 19, 2016
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Graduate Jonathan D'Cruz from Hollywood Hills High School is one of 130 college-bound students being recognized on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, as part of the First Lady Michelle Obama's Reach Higher initiative and Better Make Room campaign. The students invited to participate in the third annual Beating the Odds Summit represent urban, rural, foster, homeless, special needs, and under-represented youth who have overcome substantial obstacles to persist through high school and make it to a post-secondary institution. Jonathan was nominated by the Latinos In Action, Inc. organization to represent BCPS for his commitment and dedication to his education, as well as his leadership within his school, district and community.

At this year’s Beating the Odds Summit, the First Lady will join a panel moderated by YouTube personality, Tyler Oakley, who sat down with the First Lady in 2014 as part of a Reach Higher “Back to School” event.  Joining the First Lady on the panel will be U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr., a current college student, and musical artist Jidenna, who joined Mrs. Obama this spring at her College Signing Day event in Harlem. Jidenna will also perform for the students.
