Nob Hill Elementary School and Florida International University (FIU) partnered for a very special event for the ESE Special Classes. Student volunteers from FIU, including the sorority Alpha XI Delta and the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi, visited Nob Hill for the very first Fun Day. Kaitlyn Vargas, a member of Alpha Xi Delta, is the driving force behind this event. Kaitlyn was recently crowned Miss FIU and will be participating in the Miss Florida pageant. It is her strong passion to bring happiness to children with disabilities.
This event was created because Kaitlyn and the FIU students want to be involved in the community, and they want to raise awareness for children with disabilities. Approximately 30 student volunteers participated and provided activities to improve students' academic, communication and social skills, as well as their self-esteem, and independent functioning skills with emphasis on fine and gross motor activities. Students participated in various activities including face painting, arts and crafts, puppet making, and bean bag toss.
