Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is one of 118 school districts across the country participating in the Sprint 1Million Project to provide 2,500 BCPS students with free devices and wireless service. Starting at Deerfield Beach High School, 180 students received tablets or smartphones and internet activation.
Statistics indicate that across the country, 70 percent of high school teachers assign homework with an online component, yet more than five million families do not have internet access at home. This is called the “homework gap.” The 1Million Project is Sprint’s initiative to offer free mobile devices and free high-speed wireless internet connectivity to one million high school students throughout the country lacking a reliable source of internet access at home. This new program will help eliminate the “homework gap” that puts many students at a major disadvantage because they don’t have ready access to the internet needed for completing homework, communicating with teachers or applying for jobs, scholarships or college.
