On October 17, 2014, Atlantic, McFatter, Sheridan Technical Colleges and the Office of Equity & Academic Attainment recently hosted its first annual Adult Career Pathways Student Summit where over 400 adult education students from the district’s Adult General Education programs including Dave Thomas Education Center, Community Schools North and South, Hallandale Adult Community Center, and Whiddon-Rogers Education Center participated in a day-long seminar that provided exposure to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs offered at Broward’s three Technical Colleges.
CTE programs within the Health Sciences, Automotive, Information Technology, Construction, and Human Services demonstrated simulated career experiences for interested students and community partners including Career Source Broward, Baptist Health of South Florida, and Education for a Better America contributed through sponsorships, scholarship opportunities and financial aid information. Both Broward County Library and the Nova Southeastern Alvin Sherman Library offered information about free resources including e-tutoring, resume writing support, and test preparation. Library card drives were conducted and students pledged to commit to their educational and career goals.
Superintendent Robert W. Runcie opened the event and inspired students to continue to work hard to achieve the American Dream. Mr. Runcie also shared about the importance of voting and having a voice in decisions about their education and the education of their children.
