Village Elementary School Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss with Canine Assisted Therapy Dogs

Thursday, March 09, 2017

On Thursday, March 2, 2017, teachers and students at Village Elementary School celebrated the birthday of legendary children’s author Dr. Seuss with five Canine Assisted Therapy dogs: Brandy, Sebastian, Coral, Lexie and Scruffy.

The school’s literacy coach, Carol Camirand, partnered with Kimarea Giddings from the non-profit organization Reading is Fundamental to create a celebration for the students. Each child received a free, self-selected book with a Dr. Seuss pencil and bookmark.

The dogs enable students to read to out loud without any judgment.  Struggling readers can benefit from reading to therapy dogs and improve their literacy skills while developing a love of reading.

Camirand said, “To see their little faces light up and to watch them interact with the furry friends was well worth the effort! To experience this level of enjoyment was simply remarkable and the Village family intends to replicate this initiative on a broader scale each year for years to come!”
