Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will host its annual Construction Career Days (CCD) Fair on October 21 – 22, 2014, at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds (4271 Davie Road, Davie). The two-day event opens with a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds arena, Tuesday, October 21 at 7:45 – 8 a.m.
The event is a hands-on career fair where high school students learn about the exciting and rewarding careers in the highway and bridge construction engineering industry. Its focus is to attract young people to think about future education and career goals, while garnering their interest in the construction engineering industry.
Students will have the opportunity to interact with leaders in the construction field, observe demonstrations and experience several aspects of construction. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in fun and informative learning labs, such as constructing chocolate asphalt – where students will use edible ‘aggregates’ including coconut, rolled oats, sugar and nuts as sand and rock, and melted chocolate as tar to create asphalt. Once the ‘edible’ asphalt is dry, students will have a tasty treat and an enhanced understanding of the paving process.
The CCD Fair is a national event sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association and the Florida Department of Transportation. The success of the Fair is, in large part, due to the ongoing partnerships between BCPS and construction industry representatives, including equipment dealers, commercial contractors, highway contractors, suppliers, government agencies and community organizations.
