Two Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) top athletes, Hallandale High School junior Kimani Rushing and Broward Virtual School senior Alexander Rybako, recently competed in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games. The two joined the USA Youth Olympic Team for the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, which took place in Nanjing, China, August 16 – 28, 2014.
The Youth Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event
organized by the International Olympic Committee
. The games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games
format. Over 3,500 young athletes, 15 -18 years of age from around the globe, competed in more than two dozen events.
While in China, Rushing competed in track and field events and ran her personal best in the 100-meter hurdles. She is the current leader in Florida girls’ track and field, the number one junior in the country in the 100-meter hurdle category, and one of the top high school triple jumpers in the country. Most recently, Rushing broke the triple jump record at the 2014 National ESPN Disney Club Championships in Orlando, Florida.
Rybako competed in tennis singles and doubles at the Summer Youth Olympic Games, winning one round in the mixed doubles tennis competition. He is a multiple International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament winner in singles and doubles, and currently ranks 25th in ITF World Junior Rankings.
The Youth Olympic Games is an elite sporting event for young people all across the world. The event is distinct from other youth sports events, as it also integrates a unique Culture and Education Programme (CEP), based around five main themes: Olympism, Social Responsibility, Skills Development, Expression and Well-being, and Healthy Lifestyles. The first summer edition was held in Singapore in August 2010.
