Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is celebrating the success of the PROMISE (Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Support and Education) program. During the 1,000 PROMISES event, students will fly kites, which they built and personalized with messages about their goals and dreams. In addition, students will show their commitment to the PROMISE program and its impact on their lives by signing a special banner and creating an aerial image by lining up on the school’s field in the shape of the number 1,000.
Since its implementation at the start of the 2013/14 school year, 1,000 BCPS students have successfully completed the PROMISE program and returned to their regular school environment. Of these students, the overwhelming majority (94 percent) have not engaged again in negative behaviors that could lead to an arrest or involvement with the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The PROMISE program is a Broward County initiative designed to address the needs of students who commit non-violent infractions that previously could have resulted in the students being arrested and entering the juvenile justice system. The program emphasizes intervention and prevention. Through the PROMISE program, students receive behavioral supports, counseling and mentoring in an environment focused on helping them make better life choices. The PROMISE program is part of the commitment by BCPS toward Eliminating the Schoolhouse to Jailhouse Pipeline
