Students get a real-life lesson on democracy when they cast their ballot over the future of two trees located on the school’s campus.  The Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office is providing voting booths, “I Voted” stickers and counting machines in support of this student-voting initiative.  To make the experience as realistic as possible, students are also receiving mock voter-ID cards.

WHY:
After learning about the possible removal of two trees, which block the view of the school’s marquee, the students began a campaign to save the trees. The school’s principal, inspired by the students’ willingness to get involved and take a stand on this topic, coordinated a mock-referendum vote.  The Supervisor of Elections Office is donating the use of the voting booths and equipment in support of the school’s efforts to make this a positive learning opportunity for the students.
