On your mark, get set, go…for a fun and exciting day of competition focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at the annual Broward SECME-STEM Olympiad!  The event takes place on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Blanche Ely High School.  Approximately 1,000 students from BCPS elementary, middle and high schools will take part in the various STEM competitions, which run from 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.  Among the events:
  • Designing, building and racing mini “racecars” built out of mousetraps and other specific materials.
  • Blasting off with strategically designed water rockets to see whose will stay in flight the longest.
  • Crushing the competition in the bridge building event, in which students design and construct bridges made from balsa wood and glue to meet specific criteria – and then load test the bridges to determine which bridge can hold the most weight.
Students are also competing in bionic/robotic hand events and VEX robotic games, creating energy by building generators with FPL, putting their science knowledge to the test in team challenges sponsored by the Florida Panthers, and participating in essay and artwork contests.  Media are invited to cover the SECME-STEM Olympiad!
