North Side Elementary Grandparent Volunteer Receives State Honor

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) announced the 2013-14 winners of the Outstanding School Volunteer Award. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) North Side Elementary School Foster Grandparent Volunteer Dorothy Zarfjian is recognized as the Outstanding Senior Volunteer award winner for Region V.

The FDOE presents this annual recognition to youth, adult and senior school volunteers who have shown exceptional dedication and meaningful commitment to quality education in Florida. Outstanding School Volunteers are selected based on the number of service hours, years of service, type of contribution and unique characteristics of services rendered.

“I would like to thank these hard working individuals for committing their time and skills to helping prepare our students to excel in both college and career,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “This is a prestigious award and I’m happy to be able to recognize those who go above and beyond for Florida’s students.”

Visitors to North Side Elementary will notice immediately that Zarfjian is an essential part of the school.  As a team player and someone who genuinely cares for children, she plays many roles and has had a positive and sustaining impact on students’ lives.

She excels in student outreach, resource collaboration, and in providing academic support for students who are learning English as a second language. In her role as an advocate for students who lack support for schooling, Dorothy became a personal tutor for three students who arrived in this country from Haiti. Zarfjian dedicated her time to collaborating on assessments, and to providing support for homework and other resources to the students and their families. Thanks to her consistent instructional support each day, the students are now fully participating and engaging in school lessons and activities with their peers.

The Outstanding School Volunteers will be recognized with a letter from Commissioner Stewart, certificate of commendation in their school and featured in the Florida Association of Partners in Education newsletter.
