Seven BCPS Seniors are Candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Congratulations to the seven Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) seniors who are candidates for the prestigious 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The students are among over 3,000 candidates selected across the country for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment.
 
BCPS 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Candidates:

Antonio Juncosa, Cooper City High School
Samuel Y. Li, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
Alfred Lin, Pompano Beach High School
Katherine McGee, Cypress Bay High School
Kristen Nguyen, Boyd Anderson High School
Benjamin S. Sandler, Cypress Bay High School
 
A distinguished panel of educators will review candidate submissions to select the 500 semifinalists to be announced in April 2014.The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will then select up to 141 students as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community and school activities. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.
 
All scholars will be honored during the National Recognition Weekend, held in June in Washington, D.C. During this trip, U.S. Presidential Scholars will meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people. Scholars have the opportunity to visit museums and monuments and to attend recitals, receptions and ceremonies. To commemorate their achievement, the Scholars will be awarded the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
