Broward Virtual School Ambassadors of Hope Club has launched the new school year by joining the global celebration of “Be Kind to Humankind Week.”

Two Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) top athletes, Hallandale High School junior Kimani Rushing and Broward Virtual School senior Alexander Rybako, recently competed in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games.

South Broward High School has been awarded the Cambridge International School status by Cambridge International Examinations.

As Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students returned to school, many students received help to “dress for success” thanks to summer donations provided by District staff, community members and the Salvation Army of Broward County.

Launch of the District’s Attendance Campaign to raise awareness about the importance of regular school attendance and to reduce the rate of chronic absenteeism.

Thousands of students in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) headed back to class on Monday, August 18, 2014,  for the first day of the 2014/15 school year.  Overall, the day proceeded as planned, with no major issues or problems reported. 

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie concludes a very busy first day of school visits welcoming parents, students, teachers and staff back to school, with a news conference to discuss opening day events.

Congratulations to the Nova High School Debate Team, on receiving highest honors at the National Speech and Debate Association’s (NSDA) National Tournament. This year’s tournament was held June 15-20 in Overland, Kansas. Over 4,000 students representing 1,100 schools competed.

Cypress Bay High School’s Debate Team was one of the top 10 teams in the country to be named the “School of Outstanding Distinction” from the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament.  
Like many students starting their first day of school, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie will begin his day by riding a school bus.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to welcome students back to class on Monday, August 18, 2014, for the 2014/15 school year. 

Cooper City High School will celebrate its brand new school replacement building with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony.

Congratulations to the South Plantation High School Solar Knights team for competing in the international Solar Car Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, the only Florida team to participate.

Sheridan Technical High School will welcome students for the first time when school begins on August 18, 2014. The new school will open this school year at the former Sunset Learning Centre site in Fort Lauderdale. 

Crystal Lake Middle school faculty and staff, along with community leaders and business partners, such as My Pizza Place, Subway in the Pompano Citi Centre, Kaboom Screen Printing & Embroidery and Office Depot, will meet and welcome students and parents to the new school year. The free community event promoting the kick-off to the 2014/15 school year, will include live music, entertainment, prizes and backpack giveaways.  

Starting September 2, 2014, 42 Broward County public schools will participate in the Child Care Food Program, which is a federally funded program that provides healthy meals and snacks in the child care setting.

On Friday, July 25, 2014, more than 100 Herff Jones employee volunteers converged on the campus of Dania Elementary School in Dania Beach to spruce up the school’s 100-year-old campus and give students butterfly and reading gardens.

The annual Back to School Family Health Fair is an ongoing effort to help improve the health and social-emotional needs of the families surrounding the Dillard High School community. The goal is to inform the Broward County community of the many resources and services, which are available to them from Broward County Public Schools and other community organizations.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2014, the School Board of Broward County, Florida, unanimously approved a contract agreement with Jag Development Company, LLC, for the sale of a District owned parcel of land.  As part of the sale agreement, the District will receive between $9.4 million – $10.3 million for the vacant 12-acre site, which is located on the southeast corner of Broward Boulevard and Hiatus Road in the city of Plantation.

“Sprouting the Seeds of Literacy” Family Literacy Night is being held at two BCPS elementary schools.  The Family Literacy Night, which includes a variety of activities and crock pot recipes for learning, is a culminating event for a pilot summer program aimed at increasing students’ love of reading.

On Monday, July 21, 2014, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) joined the Council of the Great City Schools and urban school districts from across the country for a special White House event with President Barack Obama. 

This summer, 19 high school students from Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) are participating in The Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders (MTL) Superintendent's Summer Internship Program, July 7 - 24, 2014.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Department of Talent Acquisition & Operations will hold its Back-to-School Teacher Recruitment Fair, on Thursday July 24, 2014 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Today, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) released elementary and middle schools grades for the 2013/14 school year. Overall, according to preliminary data, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has seen District-wide improvement with the overall District grade increasing from “C” based on 2012/13 results to a “B” based on 2013/14 results.
