Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) strategic focus on early learning and literacy is getting national support. On Wednesday, September 21, 2016, BCPS and the non-profit organization Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) announced an exciting partnership and grant funding to support early literacy development in kindergarten through third grade students.
 
BCPS is one of four school districts in the nation chosen to participate in this initiative as part of the U.S. Department of Education i3 Scale-up grant award.
 
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrates Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week, September 19 – 24, 2016. The weeklong celebration, in partnership with the Children’s Services Council and United Way of Broward County, aims to spread messages of peace, create environments that are free from bullying and violence, and promote tolerance and positive change. This year’s theme is “Peace Through Kindness.”
 
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates 55 students for being named semifinalists in the prestigious 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. These BCPS high school seniors are among 16,000 students from around the nation selected for this honor.
 
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is being spotlighted by the White House for its focus on expanding access to computer science in schools. Today, September 14, 2016, BCPS STEM Science Supervisor Dr. Lisa Milenkovic and BCPS Office of School Performance and Accountability Director Christine Semisch, both of whom are leaders in the BCPS computer science initiative #BrowardCodes, participated in the White House Summit on Computer Science for All. 

 
Congratulations to three Broward County Public Schools students who are among the top student businesses selected to advance to the NFTE (Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship) South Florida Startup final competition. As part of NFTE's South Florida Startup Summer Program, six of the 20 students who created startup businesses were selected to move on to the Investment Panel at the Cambridge Innovation Center Miami on November 3, 2016, with a chance to win up to $10,000 in funds for their startup.

Starting this school year, Sheridan Technical College and General Motors Corporation (GM) partner to train highly skilled automotive technicians through the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP).
 
Superintendent’s First Day of School News Conference

On Monday, August 22, 2016, over 271,000 students headed to classes across Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). School Board members and Superintendent Robert W. Runcie dedicated their first day of the 2016/17 school year to visiting schools and greeting students, parents, teachers and staff.
 
Summer break comes to an end for nearly 270,000 students preparing to head back to class on Monday, August 22, 2016, the first day of the 2016/17 school year for Broward County Public Schools (BCPS).
 
The start of the 2016/17 school year is just days away, on Monday, August 22, 2016, and teachers, administrators and staff are busy getting ready! In the What’s New in 2016/17, Volume 3.
 
The School Board of Broward County, Florida, recently approved revisions to school opening and closing times for the 2016/17 school year.
 
On Wednesday, August 10, 2016, while most students are still enjoying summer break, it’s time to head back to the classroom for over 2,700 students who attend four year-round modified calendar schools in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS).

Congratulations to Broward County Public Schools Beachside Montessori Village for being named a 2016 Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.  Beachside Montessori Village is the only school in Florida to earn this prestigious distinction, and one of only47 schools and 15 districts in the nation to be selected.
 
Congratulations to Calvin Fai of Flanagan High School for being selected as a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship recipient by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Calvin, winner of the National Merit Scholarship sponsored by the University of Florida, brings the total to 14 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) graduates named college-sponsored National Merit Scholars.

Today, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) released elementary, middle and high school grades for the 2015/16 school year.
 
Today, Monday, June 27, 2016, a Legislative Hearing was held between the School Board of Broward County, Florida, and the Union, to resolve the two final items remaining in the contract negotiations for the 2015/16 school year, following an impasse declared by the Union.  
 
Students attending Broward Technical Colleges are earning the most industry certifications across the state. This school year, students at Atlantic Technical College, McFatter Technical College and Sheridan Technical College earned industry certifications in 48 tested areas, resulting in the colleges receiving $644,562 from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Performance Incentive Funding (PIF). Funds will be used to continue updating technology and equipment to meet industry standards.  
 
Today, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) released results from the Spring 2016 Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) for English Language Arts (ELA) (grades 4 through 10), Mathematics (grades 3 through 8) and Science (grades 5 and 8).  In addition, the FLDOE released results for End of Course (EOC) exams in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Biology, U.S. History and Civics.
 
Congratulations to Fort Lauderdale High School for earning top 100 placement on “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” 2016 list by The Washington Post. Fort Lauderdale High ranks 57 nationally and 13 in the state, due to their success on providing access to advanced coursework to all students.
 
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates Cooper City High School for winning the 2016 School Duel Championship!  School Duel is South Florida's premier, locally produced, academic-based television quiz show.  The competition is designed to reward and showcase intellectual talent among local high schools, as well as serve as a positive educational tool for students. School Duel featured 20 high school teams from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
