New River Middle School teacher Elizabeth Fahy is taking part in an exciting deep sea voyage, all in the name of science. Fahy is now aboard the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus, after being selected as a 2016 Science Communication Fellow. Fahy, along with the Corps of Exploration, set sail aboard the E/V Nautilus on May 10, 2016 and returns May 29, 2016. During the voyage, the E/V Nautilus is exploring the waters off of Victoria, Canada to restore the world’s largest undersea cable observatory with Ocean Networks Canada.

The School Board of Broward County, Florida, has approved school opening and closing times for the 2016/17 school year. The changes were approved by the School Board during its Tuesday, May 3, 2016, meeting. The approved bell times reflect changes to the opening and closing times for 14 District sites, including two elementary schools, four middle schools, and six high schools, as well as routes for one center and one technical college.

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus will make a stop at Bethune Elementary School to visit students and give them a unique musical experience. The Tour Bus will spend a day providing students hands-on experiences with the latest audio and video recording technologies. Students will learn how to write, perform, record and produce original songs, produce and shoot music videos and documentaries, and complete a broadcast quality music video – all in one day!

On Friday, April 8, 2016, South Plantation High School advanced to the final competition round of XQ: The Super School Project. This new educational challenge from the XQ Institute, with philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, received more than 700 applications from 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. More than 10,000 people participated in teams to submit the online application.

Plantation Middle School joins the ranks of Broward County public schools implementing innovative meal programs, on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at a school launch event. The school is introducing a Grab ‘n’ Go cart, which makes it easier for students to eat breakfast.
The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), in partnership with Toyota and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), today unveiled a unique family learning program. This innovative, two-generation model called Toyota Family Learning is a solution to the educational challenges facing low-income and diverse families. BCPS received a three-year, $175,000 grant from Toyota and NCFL to launch the program.
More than 1,300 students and 200 advisors will attend the State of Florida Student Government Convention. The event begins with a dinner on Friday night for the students. Saturday and Sunday, students compete for awards, elect next year’s state officers, create resolutions and attend workshops. Three motivational speakers will also speak to the students during the convention.
