The Broward County School Board’s tentative budget for the 2007/08 school year is $5.65 billion.
A partial breakdown of the total budget:
|
$2.27 billion
General Fund
|
$2.75 billion
Capital Projects
|
$251 million
Special Revenue

Running a school is similar to running a small business. In Broward, the
cost of running a school for a year generally breaks down to (including, but
not limited to instruction, materials and custodial services):
| - Elementary: $3.7 million |
| - Middle: $6.1 million |
| - High: $9.5 million |
There is a great deal of misconception when it
comes to the Florida Lottery and the role it plays in funding education. Since
it was established, the Lottery has contributed more than $11 billion to programs
that benefit students from early education to college. The way the Lottery divides
up the money it earns is as follows:
| - 50% goes toward prizes |
| - 39% goes toward education
(K-12 & higher education) |
| - 11% toward lottery department
administration |
For the 2005/06 school year,
K-12 programs in Florida received 11.64% of the education
share of Lottery funds (i.e. the 39% listed above) with
the remaining balance going to higher education. Break
that down even more, and you will find that Broward County
received slightly less than $0.01 of every
Lottery dollar.
For 2005/06, that translated into $30.7 million dollars from the Florida Lottery - that's $5.8 million more than the District received in 2004/05. While $30.7 million may sound impressive, it is important to know that the total is enough to operate Broward County Public Schools for about three days.
When looking at a school staff, many people wonder how many administrators
there are vs. teachers. In general, the numbers break down as follows:
| - Teachers: 67% |
| - Clerical/Maintenance: 18% |
| - Paraprofessionals: 7% |
| - Instructional Specialists: 5% |
| - Administrative: 3% |
It is also a popular opinion that the District
itself is top heavy with administrators. Take a look at the numbers however,
and it is quickly evident that this is not the case.
| - Instructional & Support
Staff: 96.26% |
| - School Administrative Staff:
2.59% |
| - District Administrative
Staff: 1.15% |
