Proposals For The ABC School Program

Broward County Public Schools is seeking proposals from qualified, major employers operating in Broward County, interested in housing kindergarten through third grade classrooms at their work site(s). A qualified employer is one that has a high number of employees with children in grades kindergarten through third grade.  An “ABC School” is defined as a public school offering instruction to students from kindergarten through third grade in a facility owned or leased by an employer.

As a participant in the ABC School Program, the employer provides space for the school at one of their business sites, including any renovations, associated operating and maintenance expenses.  In turn, the School District provides kindergarten through third grade educational programs for the children of the participating business’s employees, including teachers, curriculum, textbooks and other materials. Educational programs run for six hours per day, consistent with the District’s approved elementary school calendar. Participating employers will receive a reduction in property taxes. The change would reflect a reduction in the amount of taxable space because of the area being repurposed for the for educational program.

The purpose of the ABC legislation is to reduce the public cost of building classrooms. Employers interested in submitting proposals for the ABC School Program or wishing to have additional information should contact Merrie Meyers-Kershaw, Director, Community Involvement (754) 321-1970.
