  • BROWARD ARTS, PE TEACHERS ASKED TO TAKE HALF PAY
    Cuts to programs including libraries mean jobs will be only 20 hours a week Principals at dozens of Broward County public schools have given librarians and teachers of art, music and physical education a choice: Take a pay cut of almost 50 percent, or take your chances waiting for a job to open up at another school.

    CLARIFICATION
    The District is proposing to the BTU to provide an exemption from the Reduction in Personnel process to teachers who agreed to accept a part-time position (53.33 or higher) in order to remain at their school. Whenever possible, the District will attempt to match schools with part-time positions for those teachers who opted to be surplussed and did not accept a part-time position.

    Nova is the only school provided county-wide transportation

    Correction: Magnet Programs also have county-wide transportation

    Buses run with one only one student.
    Correction: The one student could be the last student delivered or an ESE special needs bus. Each regular bus carries 71 students and receives FTE dollars and pays for transportation costs.

    Block scheduling gives schools more money.
    Correction: Staff will supply this information for the Board and place this information in the Myth versus Fact document.

    Nothing is done to help personnel, which are let go.
    Correction: There is a process in place to help personnel who have lost their jobs, such as: coordinating with Work Force One, benefits and retirement information, resume writing, courses for teachers to pursue certification in other areas, to name a few. This is available for non-chart and chart positions. Contact non-instructional and instructional departments for more information.

    Schools are being painted often.
    Correction: Painting has been drastically cut and is only done on repair work that needs repainting and waterproofing schools to make sure mildew doesn’t get in.

    If there is no construction funding, why are projects still being done?
    Correction: There are a few projects being done, such as the Fort Lauderdale High School pool, but are federally funded by the Davis Bacon Federal Grant funding.

    Schools are running too cold.
    Correction: This has been investigated and there are just seven schools now that air conditioning needs to be reviewed.

    The cost of doing a building inspection is less if the city does it.
    Correction: It costs less if done in house.
