Partners in Education, Inc. of Broward County has donated $5,000 to assist more than 130 students enrolled in Broward County Public Schools who were recently left homeless as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Funds will be managed by the School District’s Homeless Education Program and will go toward purchasing clothing, shoes, school supplies, food, and other items needed.
The idea to keep the organization’s donation local came from Krisitn Degina, immediate past president of the Partners In Education Board of Directors. “Partners In Education is about bringing outside resources to schools to benefit students and increase student achievement,” said Degina. “What better way for us to help those devastated by Hurricane Katrina then to work with the School District to meet the needs of children entering our schools.”
Students from the Gulf Coast, impacted by Hurricane Katrina are attending elementary, middle and high schools throughout the District. Partners in Education encourage other organizations, particularly businesses already involved in partnerships with schools to join in this effort. Cash donations may be made to the Broward Education Foundation/Katrina Fund, 600 SE 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301.
Partners in Education aims to improve student achievement by cultivating and integrating business, community and school resources for all students in Broward schools. All Broward County Public Schools seek new partnerships. Businesses may make commitments of time, financial resources or other support, based on he need of the school and the type of business.
