THE UNION
QUESTION: What is the status of union negotiations?
ANSWER: After more than 30 sessions of good faith negotiations with the Broward Teachers Union (BTU) since May 19, 2009, the Broward County Public School District, today, has declared impasse in negotiations. During this school year, the School Board incurred an $11.6 million increase in medical costs to ensure that employees, including all instructional personnel, would continue to receive their comprehensive health insurance benefits without employee contributions. The issues of contention during the negotiations were BTU’s request for a four percent salary increase and the School District’s statutory requirement to implement differentiated accountability. During this impasse, the District continues to be hopeful that an agreement may be reached.
QUESTION: How does the teachers union/School Board salary negotiations impact all District employees?
ANSWER: The percentage salary increase negotiated between the Broward Teachers Union and the School Board of Broward County applies only to the teachers. Technical Support Professionals and Teacher Aides and Assistants are also represented by BTU, however, negotiate separately with the District. Other unions; e.g., Federation of Public Employees and Police Benevolent Association separately negotiate for their members. The District also works with non-union groups, like Educational Support Management Association of Browards, Inc., Broward Principals' and Assistants' Association, and Confidential Office Professionals' Association.
