BCAA Game of the
Week 2:
Blanche Ely 17 St. Thomas 9
|
On a hot, humid, rainy South Florida night the Ely Tigers demonstrated
why they're considered the number one team in Broward. Behind an
offensive line that features two high school All-Americans, Cyrim
Wimbs(#79) and Andrew Bain (#75), running back Tyronee Moss (#3)
ran for 139 yards and scored two touchdowns. The senior running back
became Broward county's all-time scoring leader with 73 touchdowns.
But the story line of the game was Ely's tenacious defense. Led by hard
hitting linebacker Jonathan Edwards (#55) the Tiger defense shut down
the St. Thomas running game and forced two turnovers. St. Thomas quarterback
Chris Carr found himself under constant pressure by the Tiger front four.
The Ely defense secured the game with an interception late in the third
quarter. Tiger Defensive back Nicholas Alvarez picked off a Carr pass
with l:58 left in the third quarter. The Tigers capitalized on the turnover
with a four-yard run from Moss, extending the Tiger lead to 17-3.
The first half was played under a constant rainstorm as both teams struggled
to sustain offensive drives. Both teams could only muster two field goals,
and the first half ended with a 3-3 tie. The skies cleared for the second
half, and Ely's vaulted offense set the tempo by moving the ball 50 yards
and scoring a TD on their first possession in the second half.
