BCAA Game of the
Week 8:
Douglas 36 - Coral Springs 23
|
There is nothing like a back yard rivalry in football. The Marjory
Stoneman Douglas High/Coral Springs High game is fondly called the "Pig
Bowl," with the losing principal kissing a live pig at the end
of the game.
For four quarters, the Douglas Eagles and Coral Springs Colts slugged
it out for supremacy in northwest Broward County. At the end of the game
it was Eagles quarterback Steve Porto who was standing tall after completing
6-13 for 194 yards. Porto's passing, along with Bill Clancy's running,
resulted in 29 first-half points for the Eagles.
The Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and seemed to have
the game well in hand. But with three blocked punts and a fumble, the
Eagles found themselves in a real dog fight. The Colts narrowed the deficit
to 29-23 with 4:10 left in the third quarter. Colt lineman Travis Rachel
blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. The
Eagles finally sealed the game with 2:42 remaining in the fourth quarter
as Porto hit All-County tight end Dan Lane for 28 yards and a Eagle touchdown.
The touchdown capped an impressive 80-yard drive, most of it through
the air.
Offensive coordinator Bobby Fuller chose not to sit on the ball in the
waning minutes of the fourth quarter. The Colt defense was not expecting
the run orientated Eagle offense to throw the ball with the lead late
in the fourth quarter.
The Colts had trouble in the first half stopping Eagle running back Bill
Clancy who scored three touchdowns. Clancy finished the game with over
128 yards rushing. But hand it to those Colts, they never quit. Both
teams laid it on the line in this backyard rivalry.
And oh by the way, for the third year in the row Ann Lynch, Principal
at Coral Springs High, had to kiss the pig.
