BCAA Game of the
Week 9:
Piper 39 - Stranahan 36
|
With 3.7 seconds left in the game, Piper quarterback David Maughin
(#11) stood behind center at the Stranahan Dragon 3-yard line. The
game was on the line, Piper trailed 36-29, with time for just one
more play.
Maughn took the snap and dropped back to pass and found wide receiver
Cory White open in the end zone. Touchdown, Bengals! Place kicker Danny
Urrego, cool and collected, converted the extra point. The Bengal homecoming
crowd went wild – the Bengals had come back from a 29-14 half-time
deficit to tie the game. The crowd remained standing realizing that overtime
would determine the victor.
In overtime the Dragons were awarded the ball first from the 10-yard
line. The Dragons tried to punch the ball in on the ground, but the Bengal
defense, tired and exhausted, withstood the Dragon assault.
The Dragons attempted a field goal...BLOCKED! It was now the Bengals
turn.
Coach Doug Gatewood decided to put the game on Danny Urrego's foot. After
running the ball twice, Danny was called in on 3rd down to attempt a
field goal. Danny once again stood cool and collected, and kicked a 28-yard
field goal through the up-rights. The Piper Bengals won on homecoming
night.
The Stranahan vs Piper matchup was the most entertaining and exciting
BCAA game of the year. Piper fullback BJ Taylor – nicknamed "Their
Bus" – rambled for over 192 yards on the ground. In the second
half, BJ was simply unstoppable, as Dragon defenders bounced off his
220 lb. frame.
By games end, players on both sides of the field were exhausted. It was
one of those games that players, coaches, refs and fans will talk about
for years. It was a game that displayed the heart and inspiration only
found in high school football.
