The Deerfield Beach High School Lady Bucks demonstrated to more than
1,000 spectators at the South Plantation High gym that a state championship
was within their grasp.
Behind the scoring of Veronica Randolph, the Lady Bucks destroyed the
Dillard High Panthers, 78-45 in the finals of the Big 8. Randolph scored
19 points, including 13 in the second quarter. This was the first
Big
8 title in the history of Deerfield Beach ladies basketball.
Last year the Lady Bucks lost to the South Broward Bulldogs in the Big
8 final.
The Lady Bucks advanced to the finals by beating both South Plantation
and Flanagan high schools. Fans were looking for a re-match of last years
final between Deerfield and South Broward, however, the Dillard Panthers
spoiled the party by upsetting the Bulldogs in the semi-finals.
Katrina Wilson from Deerfield Beach High was selected as the tournament
MVP. The all-tournament team included, Shantell Ragin from Flanagan High;
Laquetta Ferguson from South Broward High; Amandi Ray from Dillard High;
and Cristal Randolph from Deerfield Beach High.
The Big 8 tournament is sponsored annually by the BCAA and features the
top eight regular season lady basketball teams in the BCAA. The BIG 8
is played on a neutral court and determines once-and-for-all the best
team in Broward. The high school teams in this years BIG 8 Girls Tournament
included, Deerfield Beach, Dillard, South Plantation, Coral Springs,
Flanagan, Pompano, South Plantation and J.P. Taravella.
