BCAA Hog Bowl:
Western 37 - Cooper City 7
|
Approximately 25 years ago, Hollis Coleman, Athletic Director at
Cooper City High, befriended a hog named "Big Red." Big
Red became the official mascot of the Cooper City Cowboys. Legend
has it that Hollis created a national uproar when Big Red was barbecued
after the Cowboys final regular season football game. The last game
of the BCAA season featured the Western Wildcats vs. the Cooper City
Cowboys, and the game is called, appropriately enough, the
HOG
BOWL.
The Western Wildcats continued their domination of the Cowboys with a
resounding 36-7 victory.
The game marked the last regular season appearance by Western coaches
Jack Chapman and Ray Buscemi – both are retiring from the Western
program. Jack Chapman has been the Head Coach of the Wildcats since inception
of the program and through his leadership, the Wildcats has been competitive
year in and year out.
In a district with such football powers like Plantation, Dillard and
Boyd Anderson the Wildcats often found themselves consistently undermanned.
However, somehow Jack found a way to win. This year the Wildcats finished
a career best at 8-2.
Also leaving the Wildcat sideline is defensive coordinator and longtime
Chapman assistant Buscemi. Although Jack and Ray are leaving the Western
program their football work remains unfinished – both coaches will
be on the sidelines in the BCAA All-Star game and the Dade-Broward all-star
game.
