BCAA Soul Bowl:
Blanche Ely 54 - Dillard 16
|
More than 15,000 fans filled Lockhart Stadium to watch one of the
great high school rivalry games in the country – the "SOUL
BOWL." The Blanche Ely Tigers vs. Dillard High Panthers game
can trace its roots back to the 1950's, long before the integration
of public schools. The communities of Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale
proudly displayed their colors and loyalties to their respective
teams.
Blanche Ely showed why they are one of the elite teams in the state of
Florida. Behind a punishing offensive line, All-American running back
Tyronne Moss (#3) ran for 241 yard on 21 carries. Moss crossed the goal
line five times as the Tiger offense put the game away with a 25-0 scoring
run in the third quarter.
The Tigers opened the game with a 99-yard kick off return by Walter McFadden
(#17). Dillard keep the game close and actually took the lead 10-7 early
in the first quarter behind the play of quarterback Oliver Bozemann (#1)
and field goal kicker Audley Thomas. At halftime Blanche Ely led 29-16.
The second half was all Tigers – Tigers left, Tigers right, Tigers
up the middle. The Tiger ground attack accumulated more than 300 total
rushing yards. The ground game was so successful that Tiger QB Carlton
Jackson only had to pass the ball nine times the entire game.
Prior to the game, the annual Soul Bowl luncheon hosted by the Westside
Gazette was held at Blanche Ely High. The luncheon recognized two outstanding
coaches of past decades, Arthur Williams from Dillard High and Carl Jefferson
from Blanche Ely High
