North
Broward Hospital District Presents
BCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
Cooper City 21 Western 13
|
The annual HOG BOWL is part myth, part folklore and part reality. Approximately
25 years ago, Cooper City High football player Doug Amos and a group of merry
pranksters stole a pig from a local farmer. The pig was named "BIG RED" and
became the "unofficial mascot" of Cooper City High. As BIG
RED blossomed and got bigger, the Cooper City team decided to barbecue BIG
RED at an end of the year party. National headlines, Johnny Carson and
animal activists all took up the cause to save BIG RED. Rumor has it
that Doug Amos had a private team party with BIG RED as the dinner guest.
The
HOG BOWL is the last regular season game of the year. For the last
eight years, Cooper City has fallen victim to Western High. The tradition
calls for the losing principal to kiss the pig.
Over this eight-year
period, Cooper City Principal Jim Vanover has kissed a lot of pigs.
On a beautiful Friday night, the Cooper City Cowboys removed the pig from
their back by beating Western High 21-13. The Cowboys trailed the whole
game, but Coach Jim Elder never veered from the Cowboy philosophy of run the
ball and punish the defensive line and linebackers. Aliga Bettis, Cowboy
running back, ran for 123 yards on 19 carries including a 56-yard touchdown
run.
The key play of the game was a fourth and eight call late in the fourth
quarter. Trailing
13-7, Cooper City faced a fourth and eight from the Western 18-yard line. Cowboy
quarterback Justin English threw a swing pass to Willie Shepard, who broke two
tackles and rambled into the end zone. The Cowboys extra point was good
and the Cowboys led for the first time 14-13. Cooper City successfully
executed an on-side kick and Bettis sealed the game on the next play with his
56-yard touchdown run.
